Luther Point Bible Camp

March 2006

A Letter Worth Repeating:
Dear Friends of Luther Point,

You will never regret renting a cabin for several days or a week (if you want to have a wonderful relaxing time) at Luther Point Bible Camp on beautiful Wood Lake.

I must admit that even though I’ve always known and even attended various women’s meetings at Luther Point, I still didn’t realize that we as individuals or small groups could rent cabins and enjoy the absolutely beautiful setting, as I thought is was for big groups.

Three of my Catholic friends and I rented the Trinity family cabin for several days and words just don’t describe the fun we had (our ages ranged from the 50’s—80’s!)

One of our various highlights was catching large bass and sun fish so one of our evening dinners was a big “fish dinner.” Another special bonus was watching two beautiful bald eagles sitting on top of a large, tall tree while we were fishing.

I really want to encourage you all to make your reservations for your family or friends to enjoy the cabins the same way we did. There are pontoons, canoes and paddle boats for your use also. The staff at Luther Point were most helpful and made us feel so welcome.

After getting back to Amery, I told various other Lutheran members and they too did not understand that the cabins are waiting for any of you and we encourage you to call Luther Point and make your reservations for year around enjoyment like we did.

Verneil Johnson and friends (Mary, Barb and Betty)

Initial Stages of Master Planning :
The camp Board of Directors has taken the first step towards working on a master plan for the camp ministry. Several ideas, hopes and dreams have been entertained by the camp staff and board of directors over the past two-three years. Later this month (March 2006) the camp is bringing in Paul Briggs, Architect, from Lexington, North Carolina, in order to help put some clarity into the many ideas, hopes and dreams that are being considered.

Paul Briggs has extensive experience in working with over 35 outdoor ministries throughout the United States. His experience includes master planning, feasibility studies, consulting with and developing projects from design to completion.

During his first meetings with the Camp Staff, Board and constituency he will assess our current programs and usage. He will also help the staff and board to prioritize future projects and program development. The other part of the visit will involve “Town Meetings” that will be conducted on Saturday, April 1, 2006. A minimum of three town meetings will be conducted with a small group of between 6-12 people participating in each meeting.

Some of the information that will be gleaned from these meetings will include the following:
1) General impressions of Camp Association health
2) Sense of loyalty, ownership and passion for Luther Point
3) Initial impressions about ideas, hopes and dreams for the future of the camp
4) Sense of financial capabilities and/or commitment to future site development

After this initial assessment we hope to have significant clarity on what projects are most important and needed for future development. The ultimate goal is to develop specific proposals through a master plan to propel the camp ministry into a capital appeal to enhance and improve facilities and program capabilities.

Family Cabin Renewal

Nazareth and Zion Cabins are currently in the process of being remodeled. We are nearing completion on the remodeling and we intend to have the cabins available by spring. During the months of March and April we will be putting the finishing touches on kitchen cabinets, electrical and plumbing fixtures, flooring and entrance stairs and decks.

The addition of these two newly remodeled cabins will mean that the camp will now have five cabins that are fully remodeled and ready for use. Each cabin has its own bathroom with shower, bedroom, living room and kitchenette. All of them are nestled in along the shore of Akermark Bay amid beautiful pine trees, with a pristine view of the lake. When the two cabins are finished our total year around bed capacity for the camp will be 100.

The camp will have one remaining family cabin left to remodel. The name of that cabin is Jerusalem. We are not totally sure when we will proceed with this work because of some concerns with zoning. The work could start as soon as this coming fall (2006) but we are also looking for additional funding. Right now we have nearly exhausted all funding for the family cabin renewal fund. We anticipate needing approximately $20,000 more to complete the entire project.

A special word of thanks to the volunteers who have come and assisted with this phase of the family cabin renewal. We especially want to thank Orvin Luehmann, Steve Bigalk, Dean Elken, and David Weiss in addition to others who have all labored long and hard to make these cabins so beautiful.

We continue to seek gifts towards this project. If you are led to give, we would appreciate your gifts with a special designation made for Family Cabin Renewal. Thank you!!

Thank you to the following individuals, families, churches and church women who have contributed towards this project:

CAMPER CABIN REVIVAL
We are waiting for spring weather to come our way so we can get started on some of the improvements in the camper cabins. Right now we have enough funding available to replace windows in two more cabins and to begin updating some of the plumbing, sinks and countertops in the bathroom spaces in the cabins. Ultimately, when funding becomes available we will be replacing the existing mattresses and about half of the old bunk bed frames.

The camper cabins have served the needs of the summer camping program since they were built in the mid to late 40’s. Over the years the cabins have seen a variety of improvements and upgrades. We also know that the camper cabins provide a sense of character and nostalgia that go along with summer camp. We do not intend to lose that character or nostalgia but rather it is our intent to improve the function while maintaining much of the old camper cabin sense and feel.

Thanks again to all the Thrivent volunteers who helped to make the Outdoor Ministry Challenge Grant of $5,000 possible. Your many hours of volunteering and fundraising efforts have pushed our total funds to over $12,000. We are confident that in time additional funding will be forthcoming.

Thank You 2005 Camper Cabin Fund Donors

FEBRUARY PHONE-A-THON

On the evenings of February 20 and 21, Luther Point held a phone-a-thon to help bring awareness to the great need that exists for camperships and incentives for summer campers. Twenty one volunteers came together over the period of two evenings and attempted to call approximately 550 families or individuals.

When all the calls were completed and pledges and gifts were tallied, a grand total of about $3,000 was pledged by the people who were called. Additional matching gifts of about $1,500 will also be collected through the Giving Plus Program sponsored by Thrivent Financial For Lutherans through their member matching gift program. Individuals who are members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans can fill out a form which will allow the camp to receive 50 cents for every dollar given, up to $600 per gift.

Our sincere thanks to all those volunteers who gave of their time and courage to make the much needed phone calls. We also extend out gratitude to Lakeland Communications from Milltown, Wisconsin for providing the facilities and phone bank in order to make it possible for us to hold this event.

All gifts raised during this phone-a-thon will be used exclusively to help families who will need campership assistance for this coming summer camping season.

A POINT TO PONDER
Many of you probably “met” me in the last Luther Point newsletter which was published shortly before I began my ministry here as the new Program Coordinator. Since that time I have had the opportunity to settle into my new home, my new office, and my new ministry. It has been an exciting beginning to the New Year as I have begun to familiarize myself with Luther Point.

In beginning to make plans for this summer, I have been spending some time focusing on the Bible study theme: Where Jesus Meets Us. As I write this article, I look back on the first couple months of my ministry at Luther Point and recall where Jesus has met me so far. I have met Jesus in so many of the wonderful young adults that I have been interviewing for camp counselor positions. Their passion for sharing God’s love is contagious. I have met Jesus through the stories shared by those I meet who have had a life-giving experience at Luther Point in recent years or in days long gone by. It is a joy to hear of the impact this ministry has on people of all ages. I have met Jesus in the beautiful setting that is Luther Point. The trees, sunsets, and stillness whisper a spiritual peace. I have met Jesus through my co-workers who have encouraged me and made me feel welcome in this time of transition. Their joyful spirits make the office an enjoyable, inviting place to spend my days. I have met Jesus at the congregations I have visited as I see the excitement in camper’s eyes who know summer is just around the corner and hear words of thanks from parent’s whose children had a life-changing experience at Luther Point.

I thank God for the way He has met me in the experiences of my first days at camp. I am looking forward to the upcoming summer where so many people will take the opportunity to come away to Luther Point. Those who visit for a day, a week or all summer long will meet Jesus in the friendly smiles of camp staff, in the melody of familiar and new camp songs, in moments of prayerful silence, in sharing laughs with new friends, in recalling memories with old friends, in the warmth of the campfire, in the whisper of the wind, in the eager question of a young child…the blessings go on. I hope I will have the chance to welcome you to Luther Point this summer when you come to meet Jesus in this holy place.

God Bless, Bethany

Camperships and Incentives are a high priority!!
Providing incentives and campership support is a top priority for the camp. The camp is dedicated to making sure every child who has a desire to come to Bible Camp will be able to do so regardless of financial ability. Parents please take note! We do ask that you inquire with your home church first to determine how much they are able to assist you with then inquire with the camp for further assistance.

If you are able to help with the campership fund we encourage you to do so now and we ask you to think big and be generous!!! During the summer of 2005 the camp provided and gave out over $25,000 in camperships and incentives. This is an indication of the tremendous financial need there is for financial assistance in order for children to have a Bible Camp experience.

As a Camp Staff and Board of Directors we want you to know that we are serious about our mission statement, “Forming Faith, Pointing to Christ”. The formative years of our youth are also a crucial period in the formation of our faith in Jesus Christ. Bible Camp plays a key role in the formation of faith in Christ Jesus. The environment is unique and experiential which provides for a powerful time of discernment and revelation.

You can help make this time of “Forming Faith, Pointing to Christ” possible through your generous and much needed support! We as a Camp Staff and Board are convinced that the desire to come to Bible Camp is high and that the financial need is great for many families.

We do want to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who gave in 2005 and for those who have already given in 2006 toward this important and necessary fund. Thank you!! You are making a difference in the life of a child because of your support.

Thank you 2005 Campership Fund Donors!

As we think about the Luther Point Foundation, let us be reminded of Colossians 2:6-7 that says, "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." The Foundation can be viewed as the roots that the camp can be built upon into the future and we should be overflowing with thankfulness as we are reminded of how God has blessed Luther Point Bible Camp.

May we show this thankfulness in our giving to the Foundation so that our roots may grow deeper. Gifts may be given in the form of a cash donation. A future gift can be given through a will, life insurance policy or other bequest. The Foundation Board of Directors is planning several cottage meetings to view the camp's new video and discuss funding ideas for the Foundation. If your church is interested in holding one of these meetings, please call the camp for more information.

Thanks to all who have donated to the Foundation in the past. We ask you to prayerfully consider how you might help us in our mission…To strengthen and expand the Christian ministries of Luther Point Bible Camp now and into the future by providing funding for:

• Facilities enhancement and expansion
• Staff Education and Scholarships
• Program Development
• Other needs as they arise

For more information about making a gift to the Foundation, please call the camp office at (715) 689-2347.
