Luther Point Bible Camp

Sept 2007

Listen God is Calling :
prayerGod has called the young and old to Luther Point.
He has called young adults to come, share their stories,
their time and their love of God. He has called youth
to come, play, worship, and learn from nature, young
adults, and each other. He has called families with
young children, families with teenagers, single
parent families and families with no children to
come, worship together, play together and renew
relationships with each other and with Him. He
has called grandparents, aunts, uncles, and
other extended family to come play and enjoy
the sacred grounds here. He has called church councils to
come here where there are few distractions. He has called them to meet,
renew, and make goals. He has called people to come, work and serve others. He has calledpeople to come, discover themselves and God in a new, open, Christian environment. He has called people to
work on the board and to be on staff. He has called people of all ages to come, discover Him,
renew themselves, learn about His creation, and live (even if it is only for a few hours) as
brothers and sisters in Christ. Each of these people have a story to tell. Each has a life worth celebrating. Let uscelebrate together with pictures, stories and comments from many of those that have been

2007 Summer Ministry Team

I was going to let my grandchildren sleep in a bit later Friday morning at camp. The last one was just getting out of bed when the bell rang for Bible Study Intro. I said “you don’t have to go to the morning singing.” Four voices shouted, “I want to go!!”
and off they ran.
~ Grandparent of
four grandchildren ages 5, 6, 7 & 9.

As always, Luther Point Bible Camp was a sanctuary and a source of spiritual, mental, and physical
renewal. Thanks a million! This place is a foretaste of heaven!

~ Family Cabin Retreat Guest

The pontoon ride in the rain was a fun experience. The labyrinth was a great way to
walk and talk with God.

~ Women’s Group Retreat Guest

God met all of our needs and we were all blessed on this retreat. We are thankful for Luther Point and its mission to serve the Lord through this facility.
~ Marriage Retreat.

Luther Point is one of those incredible places that is filled with a loving Christian environment. At
first I wondered if I would truly care for my campers but I realized quickly that it is very easy to care
deeply for campers. I think the hardest thing is when campers leave and you have no idea
where they go from there. Each camper is a part of my life for the blink of an eye yet lives can change in that short time.

~ 2007 Summer Ministry Team Member

This was a highlight of our daughter’s summer. She had so much fun and
benefited from the wonderful role models you have working there.

~ Parent of an 8 year old camper

I have talked with our campers since camp and they are stronger in their faith, hungry for God’s Word, eager to see what God has to say to them. I have encouraged them in their Bible reading to do it the way they did in morning Bible Study at Luther Point. Pray…read a portion of scripture… look at it slowly…see how it relates to everyday life…because it probably does…take it in…pray again. I am so glad that God
placed you all at Luther Point. Talk about the holy calling of God! We trust you with our kids. You have been blessed to be a blessing! Thanks for following your calling!

~ A Pastor

Luther Point.

Called To…
As I reflect on the summer camping season that
prayerhas just passed and on the daily "called to…"
themes which structured our camp days, I am reminded of amazing, wonderful and sometimes unexpected ways God called people while they were at Luther Point this summer:
Called to Be Loved
~ Campers experienced acceptance, love and grace in this Christian
community.
Called to Gratitude
~ Campers were called to use their talents to glorify God during Guitar
and Drama Camp.
~ Out of their abundance, campers generously offered their canteen
money to the orphans at the New Life Community Center in Kisii, Kenya.
Called to Faith
~ A three year old grandchild camper recognized God in a storybook
picture about a woodworker who loved his wooden creations. The
child even remarked that he thought the woodworker looked liked
God, especially from the side.
~ Some campers heard the salvation message for the very first time
in a worship service, around the campfire or in the intimacy of their
cabin group.
~ Still other campers heard the familiar story of Jesus' death and resurrection
in a way that brought it to life and helped them know it is real.
Called to Love
~ God called together a capable, committed summer ministry team
who were diverse in their backgrounds and life experiences. They
worked tirelessly to share God's love with campers of all ages.
~ Campers experienced the daily Bible study themes in hands on
ways through an environmental scavenger hunt, a bandage making
service project and a global awareness activity as they put their love
into action.
Called to Share
~ A record number of people made Luther Point their vacation destination
during family camp, knowing that they could share time with
their families in a safe, Christ-centered environment.
~ 19 Senior High Youth heard God's call to serve as BUDDIES at Luther
Point. They put hard work into kitchen and housekeeping duties as
well as growing their leadership skills and their faith.
~ Our International Counselor,Mike Lulanga, shared stories about
Malawi and how God is working in his country. This united us with our
brothers and sisters in Christ across the world.
God's holy calling really did come to life this summer at Luther Point.
Thanks be to God for his perfect, unending grace that was so evident in
the lives of campers, staff and all those who visited this sacred ground
over the summer months.
God Bless,
Program Coordinator Bethany Walker

Pointing to the Future....
Plans continue to move ahead for a major capital campaign. The camp Board of Directors
and camp staff are continuing to work on preparations to conduct a capital campaign with a
minimum goal of $1.5 million dollars and a challenge goal of $2 million dollars.
The proposed projects for this campaign are as follows:
1) The camp is looking to expand its capabilities of providing greater safety for our camper
guests and expanding our retreat facilities, especially for youth and young adults. In order to
do this, the camp is looking to build a storm shelter / youth retreat facility. During the summer
months this building will provide safety for our camper guests during inclement weather.
The upper level of the building will provide space for summer program office, summer staff
lounge, support staff housing, and Infirmary and medic housing.

During the retreat season the upper level will provide housing and shower facilities for
up to 60 guests. The lower level would serve as gathering space for retreat groups during
this time. The camp is also proposing that a large pavilion area be built onto the side of the
building to provide for more rainy day activity space. This space could also host a variety
of other activities such as the Annual Quilt Auction, church picnics, outdoor concerts and
much more.
2) The camp septic system is in need of a significant upgrade. The upgrade would
include the installation of a new pump station and will add a pretreatment station that
would treat the waste water before it is pumped to the drain field. The existing drain field
will also be rebuilt which will allow the system to serve the camp’s septic needs for several
years to come.
3) The challenge goal portion of the campaign (additional $500,000) will allow the
camp to do additional improvements to existing facilities. The primary improvements
would be on the Dahlberg Memorial Chapel. We would like to make this a year-round
building which would include new energy efficient windows, heating, fill out walls with
insulation and sheetrock, lighting, reinforcing the existing floor and upgrade the sound system.
We also plan to change the use of a couple buildings by converting the Ouch House
(infirmary) and Koinonia (summer support staff housing) into shower houses.
The camp cleared a significant hurdle this summer with the granting of a conditional
use permit from the Burnett County Zoning Board. The camp felt that it was absolutely
imperative to obtain the conditional use permit before moving ahead with the Capital
Campaign. The conditional use permit allows us to build the new facility. We are also happy
to announce that there has been no appeal of the Zoning Board’s decision. This pretty much
gives camp the green light to move ahead with the Capital Campaign. The only thing preventing
us from building the facility is the lack of funds.
The Camp Board also decided at their August meeting to sign a contract with the
fundraising firm, Gronlund, Sayther, Brunkow, Inc.(GSB), to assist the camp with the Capital
Campaign. GSB has a proven track record among Lutheran camps across the country in
helping them reach and in many cases exceed their fundraising goals.
As the camp moves into the initial phase of the Capital Campaign, we will be seeking out
individuals who will provide leadership to the various aspects of the Campaign. We will also be
seeking out individuals and families who will be considering a major gift to the campaign effort.
Major gift cultivation will take place over the next 12 to 18 months with the congregational
phase of the Campaign starting late 2008 or Spring 2009.

Since this camp is such a hit in the summer we thought it would be great to give grandparents and grandchildren an opportunity to come away to Luther Point during the fall months. This retreat will offer you a chance to grow your special relationship in a Christ-centered environment. Enjoy the comfort of the Retreat Center and the beauty of the camp grounds. Grandchildren of all ages are welcome. These retreat dates coincide with school breaks. So see when your grandchild is free and plan to bring them to camp for an overnight stay. Get connected to God and your camp friends while we join together for weekend camp to study the theme GODSPACE.COM. Discover how God is connected to you in all aspects of your life. You will explore this theme through Bible study, songs, campfires, games, crafts and more. You will spend the weekend with other campers your age as well as camp counselors. The retreat will run from Saturday morning at 9AM - Sunday at 12Noon. Go online to LutherPoint.org to download a registration form. Invite a friend to join you. The fee for the weekend is just $50. Camperships are available by request. Don't wait until next summer to experience Luther Point. Make plans now to attend Weekend Camp and explore all the spaces where God is part of your life. So far our 2007 mid-week retreating season has been enjoyed by many people. If you have not yet taken part in one of these brand new retreats, there are still a couple for which you can register. Registration forms for mid-week retreats are available online at LutherPoint.org or by calling Lisa at 715-689-2347.

Camp In All Seasons

Luther Point is NOT just for summer! See the events below! We are pleased to announce that all six Family Cabins have been fully winterized and remodeled. With the completion of this work the camp now has a total of 102 year-round beds. We continue to see a steady increase in the usage of Family Cabins. With the additional space for sleeping and housing we have been able to accommodate
larger groups. Family Cabins make it possible for us to offer overflow housing for groups in the Retreat Center. Individual families are discovering Family Cabins as well. We have hosted a number of new families this year and many of them have expressed their desire to come back again next year. One of the reasons we are seeing an increase is because of the word of mouth testimonials people are sharing with their friends and relatives. One of the uses that we are recommending to churches is the idea of having a church council retreat in the Family Cabins. One of the cabins (Jerusalem) has been constructed to be a meeting space for a small group of between 8-15 people. Perfect for a church council retreat,
your council members could be housed in the four to five Family Cabins for sleeping quarters and your meetings could be held in Jerusalem. We still have some significant landscape work to do around the cabins. Soil erosion has been a concern near a couple of cabins and we would like to lessen the erosion by building some landscape steps down to the lakeshore. We also see a need to install some open cedar fencing in a variety of places to define parking areas around the cabins and to define lawn spaces. We would eventually like to see some better lawn development to also make the area less sandy and less barren. We extend an invitation to you to consider this place set apart from the day to day rush and busyness. If you are interested in finding out additional information about the Family Cabins or other retreat facility options contact Lisa at 715- 689-2347 or LIsa@LutherPoint.org or check out our website,

Siren Glen Link5th ANNUAL GOLF SCRAMBLE
The 5th Annual Luther Point Golf Scramble was held on Monday, June 4th at the Siren National Golf Course near Siren, Wisconsin. The event has become an annual occurrence with the emphasis on raising awareness for the need to provide
camperships for children to attend Bible camp. All the proceeds that are raised from this evenwomento go directly to the campership fund. This year the event raised about
$4,700 after all expenses were paid. Fair skies prevailed with 64 golfers taking the course. Additional golfers had preregistered but due to unforeseen circumstances,
two teams needed to bow out at the last minute.
Several local businesses help to support this event with hole sponsorships and event sponsorships. A variety of items are also provided by businesses which are given away as
door prizes during the banquet meal after the day of golf. Many of the golfers travel to the camp for the
banquet meal where a variety of awards are given to top golfers for both individual and team awards. The awards were provided by Lee’s Pro Shop from Pine City, MN. A detailed list of all the businesses who provided sponsorship and prize gifts is listed below.“We offer Camperships for all programs. It is the policy of Luther Point that no one is turned away regardless of their ability to pay.” This statement is a policy that we are very committed to fulfilling. During the 2007 summer camp season, Luther Point provided over $33,500 in Camperships and Incentives. These dollars made it possible for over 800 campers to attend camp.
The Campership program is made possible because of all the generous gifts that come from
multiple individuals and families. The camp conducted a Campership Phonathon in February.
Also, a letter was sent to people who have supported the Campership Fund in years past. The
combined total of these two asks was $12,430 along with Thrivent Matching funds of over
$2,500 which totaled nearly $15,000. The 5th Annual Golf Scramble funds also go directly to
the Campership Fund. After expenses, the Golf Scramble raised about $4,700. Special designated
gifts of about $9,000 have also been received from individuals and congregations. Total
Campership gifts received is about $29,000 to date. Additional Campership gifts are still needed
for the remainder of this year to make up the deficit. Thank you very much to everyone who has contributed towards this very important fund. Your support is given for the sake of youth and families who need assistance for their children to attend Bible camp. Close to 80% of all campers who attend Bible camp at Luther Point receive some kind of campership or incentive from the camp in order to make
it possible for them to attend one of our summer programs. Thank you for providing
this wonderful opportunity

The First Place Team: Jim Danielson,Tim Ballis, Brad Samuelson, and Jake Sauter..
A special thanks to Lee’s Pro Shop from Pine City, Minnesota who provided all the trophies and special game prizes for the scramble tournament. Several door prizes were also provided for the event from a variety of area businesses. We thank all those businesses and individuals who participated in making this year’s event possible. Several families and children will benefit from this event as they receive camperships to make it possible for them to come to camp.

We provided a nice buffet supper at the club house after the event. In years past, we have served the supper at the camp. We were pleased to have the supper at the club house because it made it possible for more of the participants to stick around and be a part of the awards and prize give-a-way. Approximately $4,400 was raised after expenses and will go directly toward helping children to have a Bible Camp experience this summer.
